What I know so far...

In the last hundred years, like i said earlier, women have seen an amazing shift in the opportunities brought forth to them. Starting with 19th amendment to the constitution, women were free to vote in elections. This gave way to a bob cut hairstyle, a dropped waist dress and a rise in the hem length of those dresses. Women had their first taste of what was to come for their daughters' daughters' daughters. World War II, women were off to work to support the boys overseas. Hairstyles became elaborate, but simple and fabric for clothing became limited causing well fitted clothing. The 60's was the birth of 'The Revolution', women and men alike had long hair, women wore jeans and protested the femininity standards their mother's and grandmother's had been held to. Free love was in the air and women were starting to wonder if they were being held back because of who they were. This leaves me with the question of whether or not the clothing of the times has any connection with the on going events of the times. If there is a connection, how will this prelude to what our future holds both politically and fashionably with women running for President and Vice President.

  1. Leah, I enjoy the topic you have chosen, and I believe it does. The clothes that women wear usually do express what is going on whether it be their little niche they dug out with their family and small community or the entire world. For example, how many boys/men in the 1950's of America had long, frazzled hair? Now I know that men and women are two different subjects of matter, but the result is the same. The answer to the question is "not many," for the 50's was a period of clean-cut, wholesome, family-oriented way of life.
